New Public Entrance to Safe Neighborhoods Office Beginning May 14th

Wellington is closing the main doors of its Safe Neighborhoods Office – but only temporarily to accommodate the construction of the Neil S. Hirsch Family Boys & Girls Club. Beginning on Monday, May 14th and until construction is completed, the main entrance of the Safe Neighborhoods Office and the parking area on the north side of the facility will be temporarily closed. Residents will need to use the entrance located on the east side of the Safe Neighborhoods Office as well as the parking area located in front of the Water Treatment Plant. A sidewalk is available for access. In addition, the basketball courts located northwest of the Safe Neighborhoods Office will be permanently closed beginning Monday, May 14th to make way for the new Boys & Girls Club.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Neil S. Hirsch Family Boys & Girls Club will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22nd at the site at 1080 Wellington Trace. Construction of the 22,570 square foot facility is anticipated to be completed in March 2013 and will include a computer room, dance and music studios, science lab, and indoor and outdoor recreational areas.

Groundbreaking Ceremony for Neil S. Hirsch Family Boys & Girls Club

Join Wellington’s Village Council at 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 22nd for a groundbreaking ceremony for the Neil S. Hirsch Family Boys & Girls Club. The ceremony will take place at the site at 1080 Wellington Trace at the northwest corner of the water treatment plant. Construction of the 22,570 square foot facility is anticipated to be completed in late 2013 and will include a computer room, dance and music studios and a science lab.

“We are so happy to be breaking ground for this new clubhouse. Over the years, the small size of our current facility forced us to turn hundreds of children away. The new Neil S. Hirsch Family Boys & Girls Club will enable us to serve hundreds of children who might otherwise go home to an empty house each day after school or spend school breaks alone. It’s going to be an amazing place for kids to come, learn and make lifelong friends,” said Mary O’Connor, president and chief executive officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County (www.bgcpbc.org) is the county’s largest facility-based youth development organization, offering a broad range of programs and activities in six core areas: education and career development; character and leadership development; sports, fitness and recreation; health and life skills; technology; and the arts. The clubs serve more than 7,500 youth each year, ranging in age from 6 to 18.

Public Hearing May 16th about Fair Housing

Beginning in 2013, Wellington will be eligible to receive approximately $229,000 per year in federal grant money to address housing, community development and homeless needs. But first, the Village wants your input to make sure the money is devoted to the right programs.

Wellington residents are invited to speak out at a public hearing on Wednesday, May 16th at 6:00 pm at Village Hall located at 12300 Forest Hill Boulevard. The hearing will allow residents to comment on the drafts of Wellington’s 5-Year Consolidated Plan, Annual Action Plan, and Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice. These documents are required for Wellington to receive funds through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant program and explain how the money would be utilized over the course of the next five years. They also identify any barriers to fair housing that could be corrected with grant funding.

Copies of the draft documents will be available for review from Monday, May 7th through Wednesday, June 6th at Village Hall (12300 Forest Hill Boulevard), the Wellington Community Center (12150 Forest Hill Boulevard), the Palm Beach County Library’s Wellington Branch (1951 Royal Fern Drive), and Wellington’s Safe Neighborhoods Office (1100 Wellington Trace).

Residents can also provide additional input by participating in two surveys posted in both English and Spanish on Wellington’s website. To access the surveys, visit www.wellingtonfl.gov and click on the Housing Needs Assessment Survey icon on the home page.
