MUNICPAL COMPLEX HOMECOMING

Every single one of us, past and present, has wanted to see this municipal complex built, Mayor Bowen said. Councils before us had a hand in it by buying the land on Forest Hill Boulevard where we are creating the Town Center. This is our chance to recognize and acknowledge all the people helping get us to this point.

The municipal complex will be a 54,000-square-foot, Florida Vernacular style, 2-story structure built to LEED standards for environmental quality and energy efficiency. It will feature a clock tower at the entrance and a council chamber designed to seat 156 people.

The $10.5 million complex is being built with no tax increase and no borrowing as Wellington is using building impact fees accumulated during the construction boom. These funds cannot be used for general government purposes. The money is from impact fee dollars which would have been required to be returned to developers, if not spent on facility upgrades. Having one central municipal complex will save time and money, as Wellington will retire several old portable buildings it has been renting and end other leases for office space.

This will be the first time in the history of Wellington that all management and administrative staff will work in the same building at the same location, Manager Paul Schofield said. "e;We expect to see a savings in our operating budget within the first year of moving in.

Construction is expected to be complete by December 31, 2010.
